Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga has organized 28 international symposia on Transfusion Medicine in Groningen. He was the chairman of the organizing committee of the 1986 12th International Scientific Meeting Society for Low Temperature Biology in Groningen, the 1990 3rd WAA congress and vice-chairman of the 1994 International Congress of ISBT in Amsterdam.

Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga has served ISBT in numerous working parties and committees (e.g., Socio-economic, Education, Publications, Clinical Transfusion, etc.) and served as the Editor-in-Chief of Transfusion Today from 1992 to 2004.

Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga is the founder of the European Society for Haemapheresis (EFSH, 1980) and a co-founder of the World Apheresis Association (WAA, 1984) and served both organizations as a President.

Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga is the founder of the Academic Institute for International Development of Transfusion Medicine (IDTM, 2001) at UMCG, Groningen focused on restricted economy countries. This unique institute provided a post-academic Master course (e-learning) in Management of Transfusion Medicine (MMTM). He also created the Dutch Sanquin Consulting Service (2001) and the AABB Consulting Services Division (2002).

He has written and edited over 35 books on Transfusion Medicine, published over 350 peer reviewed articles and chapters in books. He presented countless scientific posters and orals at numerous international professional congresses and meetings.

Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga has been recognized and honored as an honorary member of the Brazilian, Dutch, Hellenic, Hungarian and Indian Societies for Blood Transfusion and Immunohaemotology, received the AABB Joel Solomon Memorial Award for Quality Management in Transfusion Medicine (2001).

He was honored to present the Mayo Clinic (1994), Leela Moolgaokar Memorial (1997), Tibor Greenwalt (2002), Claes Högman Memorial Lecture (2007), and invited as a Harvard Medical School JPTM Grand Rounds Lecturer (2010).


Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga is the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology since 2012. In this interview Professor Cees Th. Smit Sibinga shared his experience, philosophy and advice about being an editor of a journal and academic publishing.

Edorium Journals: What motivates you to contribute as the Editor-in-Chief/editor of an academic journal?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Expanding my personal knowledge and experience in the field –cutting edge as well as keeping track with developments in different parts of the world. Being able to stimulate scientists and researchers from different parts of the world to improve on their science and research, learning to discover the stories behind data and their values.

Edorium Journals: What challenges do you face in your routine work as an editor?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: To maintain impartiality and objectivity, while including an educational element in the review of manuscripts and related decisions and directions for improvement to be advised to authors.

Edorium Journals: Can you describe some qualities of the best journals for which you have contributed as an editor compared to other journals?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Setting quality standards for publication without compromise.

Edorium Journals: What changes would you like to see in the current editorial and peer review processes?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Selection of potential reviewers and training these colleagues to be critical and impartial, constructive and objective in their reviews and related documented advice for improvement.

Edorium Journals: Do you think journals should have a formal induction/training program for editors?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Yes, see my comment and opinion above.

Edorium Journals: How can journals educate authors in conducting good research and writing good articles?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Providing basic guidelines and instructions, both for the research (basic and applied) and for putting a proper and contributing manuscript together.

Edorium Journals: What advice would you give to authors for writing good articles?
Cees Th. Smit Sibinga: Self-reflection and critical review of data collected and their evaluation. Start with a clear and unambiguous objective(s) and make sure the conclusions reflect the objectives.
